Frequently asked questions
How does the color matching work?+
Each catalog color and your target are converted from hex to the CIELAB color space, then ranked by CIE76 ΔE — the straight-line perceptual distance between two colors. Lower ΔE means a closer match. Under 2 is visually identical; 2–5 is a close match; 5–10 is noticeable up close; above 10 the colors read as clearly different.
What is ΔE (Delta E)?+
ΔE is the standard measure of how different two colors look to the human eye. Unlike comparing raw RGB values, it accounts for the fact that we perceive some color shifts more strongly than others, so the ranking reflects what your eye would actually see.
Where do the catalog colors come from?+
The matches are drawn from a catalog of thousands of real filament colors across 14+ brands — the same reference data behind Printfarm. We match against each color's manufacturer-claimed hex.
Will the match be exact?+
It is a close-as-possible suggestion, not a guarantee. Matching uses the manufacturer's claimed hex, which can differ from a printed part, and screens are not color-calibrated. Always confirm with a physical swatch before committing to a large print.
Is the tool free?+
Yes — completely free and no signup required. Enter a hex or pick a color and the matches update live.
